Halifax is in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People, who have cared for its lands and waters for millennia.
For generations, the Shubenacadie waterway, including Lake Banook, has been a place of travel and gathering for the Mi'kmaq. As we prepare to welcome the world in 2026, we honour this history and the ongoing relationships that connect us as Treaty People.
